Set Up Gmail Account with Windows Live Mail 2012

I just spent an hour and a half figuring out how to set up a Gmail / Google Apps Account with Windows Live Mail 2012 so I figured I would share the knowledge.

There’s a lot of articles out there about how to configure the account in Windows Live, but I ran into some problems along the way that made the process much more difficult and frustrating. So, hopefully this will help you avoid that. Feel free to jump down to step 3, if you already tried to set up the account and are getting the “server has rejected your login” error.

First, you need to enable IMAP in your Gmail Account.

1 – Go To Your Gmail Settings

2 – Click the Forwarding and POP/IMAP and make sure the “Enable Imap” is selected. Click “Save Changes” at the bottom of the screen.

Second, I’ll Walk You Through Adding the Account in Windows Live 2012

Lastly (and Optional) – Solve “The server has rejected your login” Window Live Mail / Gmail

Once you finished the video above, technically Windows Live should start syncing with your Gmail and everything should work great. However, when I was finished I got this error: “The server has rejected your login. Please verify that your username and password are correct”.  After retyping my password several times I realized that wasn’t really the problem.

Come to find out, this is a security feature set by google to prevent less secure apps from connecting with their servers. We simply need to disable it.

  1. Return to your account in your browser.
  2. Click the Gear Icon (top right corner) > Settings
  3. Click the Accounts tab
  4. Click “Google Account settings”
  5. Under Sign in and Security, click “Signing into google”.
  6. Scroll to bottom and find the header Connected Apps & Sites. Make sure the option “Allow less secure apps” is set to “on”.

After changing this, my email would connect! yay!
